A memory for your After Effects projects.
Murre keeps the files, versions, notes, references and renders around a motion project in one place. So when you reopen it in eight months, you know where everything is.
Free, open source, and it never leaves your Mac.
If you've worked with After Effects long enough, you've reopened a project from eight months ago and had to work out which .aep is the real one, where the footage went, and what the client actually asked for.
The files are fine. It's the context that's gone.
Murre keeps that context next to the project, so reopening an old one feels less like archaeology.
Features
Small, specific things that a motion designer actually runs into.
Versions, with a clear “current”
Every .aep in the project, newest first. You mark the current one yourself. Murre never guesses, and it warns you if that file goes missing.
Adopt a project you're already in
With a project open in After Effects, one click builds the folder structure, saves a copy of the .aep into it, and brings the footage along. The original isn't written to.
Colors and expressions, extracted
See the colors actually used in a project and every expression in it, searchable, with where each one lives. Copy them without opening the file.
- Renders you can approveBrowse pre-renders, renders and deliverables with thumbnails. Mark one approved, and Murre tells you if the file changes afterwards.
- Notes and a reference boardMulti-page notes, a to-do list, and a free-form board for images, video, PDFs and links. All of it stays with the project.
- Local files, nothing elseNo account, no cloud. Everything is ordinary folders, .aep files and JSON, so your project is still usable without Murre.
How it works
- 1Give the project a homeStart a new project, or bring in one you already have. New ones get a numbered folder structure for workfiles, assets, renders and deliverables.
- 2Let the Companion read After EffectsA small panel inside After Effects reports your comps, footage, colors and expressions to the app. It only reads, apart from the relink step you choose to run.
- 3Come back in eight monthsOpen the project. The current version, the to-dos you left, the client notes, the approved render and the palette are all on one page.
Honesty
Better you hear it from me now.
- Not a cloud service. No accounts, syncing or sharing.
- Not a replacement for After Effects. It reads and organizes your project.
- Not for teams. It's a single-user tool.
- Not on Windows or Linux. macOS only, for now.
- Not a backup. Murre keeps backups of its own notes and data, not your media.
- Not a guesser. It won't pick your current file or delete your footage for you.
FAQ
I'm looking for a few motion designers to break it on real projects. Nothing to buy, and I won't sell you anything later. I'd just like to hear how you manage your folders and what falls apart.
